  • How small genetic differences can impact hormones, heart, mental health and so much more

  • A DNA test can be done at any age as your DNA is fixed at birth and is not affected by medication or supplements

  • Knowledge is power and the best thing about knowing this information is being able to make positive focussed changes through nutrition and lifestyle to optimise your health

What is nutriGenomics?

Nutrigenomics is a branch of genomics that explores how an individual's genetic makeup (their DNA differences) interacts with their diet and is changing the future of health and medicine. It examines how specific genes influence a person's response to different nutrients and dietary components. By understanding these interactions, you can tailor dietary recommendations to an individual's genetic profile, promoting better health and disease prevention.

HOW DO I DO A DNA TEST?

A DNA test kit will be posted to you, so that you can do the test in the comfort of your home. The test is quick and painless, as it’s a cheek swab test. To do this you rub a cotton bud swab along the inside of your cheeks to collect any loose cells. This is then posted back to Lifecode GX, so that they can analysed by the laboratory and your results are ready three weeks later.

Once I get the results, I will go through them with you in detail and use them to guide my recommendations for personalised food and lifestyle changes.

Lifecode GX prioritise data security and protection. They do not share or sell your data. They anonymise all samples and only use your data to produce your nutrigenomics report. The sample is destroyed after three months.

What does a DNA test tell us?

A DNA biological code doesn’t just impact gender, height and eye colour. It tells the body how to do everything, including how to absorb and use specific nutrients like vitamins. It impacts the production of hormones, reproduction and fertility and neurotransmitters, influencing thinking and emotional wellbeing. It regulates how your cells can grow and repair, even how efficiently they produce energy or how you store excess energy as fat…it’s the very CODE OF LIFE.

The key is that the only genes looked at, are the ones we can influence by diet and lifestyle changes.

DNA Test and CONSULTATION £320

Nutrigenomics looks at how nutrition and other lifestyle factors influence our genetic potential. It means you can make informed decisions about your diet and maximise the benefits.

The DNA kit is from Lifecode GX. The test is posted to you to do at home and the results are emailed to you in a report. DNA tests are not easy to interpret unless you have genetic training. The 60 minute consultation is to guide you through the report to ensure you understand which areas of your health require support with regards to dietary changes and supplements. The test is a mouth swab that is a simple and non-invasive test that you can do from home.

Nutrient Core - The test analyses how gene variants can affect food tolerance (or intolerance), blood sugar balance, appetite control, vitamin and mineral needs, detoxification ability and susceptibility to inflammation and infection. It includes genes that have been known to affect:

  • Food response - coeliac disease (gluten) and lactose intolerance

  • Caffeine - sensitivity and metabolism

  • Microbiome - diversity

  • Vitamin need - vitamin A, Folate, B12, C, D, and K

  • Blood pressure - sodium potassium balance & salt sensitive hypertension

  • Detoxification - glutathione

  • Metabolism - blood sugar control (insulin), appetite (leptin)

  • Inflammation - specific (infection response) and systemic

  • Circadian rhythm - early bird or night owl predisposition

Methylation - Methylation is vital for gene control, DNA repair, metabolism, and immune function. It also helps make neurotransmitters, detoxifies the body, and energy production. Imbalances in methylation - too little or too much - can increase susceptibility to chronic health conditions such as heart disease, circulatory problems, chronic fatigue, infertility, immune and autoimmune conditions, food and chemical sensitivities, and mood and psychiatric disorders, as well as cancer and premature ageing.

The Methylation test examines genes involved in five sub-cycles - folate, methionine, neurotransmitter, transsulphuration and urea. Genetic results will inform whether someone is likely to be poor or overly efficient at processing cofactors - B6, B9 (folate) and B12 (cobalamin), methionine, betaine, choline, zinc and magnesium; and inhibitors - chemicals, moulds, drugs, hormones and heavy metals and provide guidance on how to support or bypass bottlenecks or weaknesses.

  • Fertility (egg/sperm health, miscarriage, birth defect, blood clotting)

  • Cardiovascular disorders

  • Migraine

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Endometriosis

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Toxicity and detox

  • Neurological (anxiety, autism, mood, depression, ADHD, additive behaviour)

  • Long Covid

Detoxification - Detoxification is how our body removes harmful stuff. The liver does most of the work, but other organs help too, like the small intestine, kidneys, and lungs. It changes substances like nutrients, pesticides and medication so they are easier to move out of our body.

The detoxification report describes the genes, nutrients, lifestyle and environmental factors that can impact detoxification. Poor detoxification can impact many systems, leading to various symptoms including:

  • Gatro-intestinal - gallbladder problems, bloating, fatty stools, constipation, diarrhoea, intolerance to fatty foods, swollen liver and halitosis.

  • Immune - food allergies, skin issues (rashes, itchiness), asthma, recurrent infections

  • Endocrine - infertility, PMS, weight gain, depression, anxiety and mood swings

  • Nervous - headaches, dementia, poor memory and concentration, neuralgia

  • Musculoskeletal - muscle aches and weakness, arthitis

  • Other - Sensitivity to chemicals and odours, chronic fatigue, anaemia and premature aging

Hormones - Oestrogen is an important female hormone. It also plays a smaller role in men. Its main job is to promote cell growth and development, including the female reproductive system. Additionally, it helps with bone density, blood clotting, and affects aspects like hair, skin, and muscles. The hormones test analyses genes involved in the oestrogen lifecycle. It looks at how gene variants affects production, activation and elimination of oestrogens as well as detailing the nutrients and environmental factors that can influence and improve their balance. This report is recommended for women who suspect oestrogen-linked conditions.

Steroid hormones, made from cholesterol, act as chemical messengers in the body, regulating important functions like the reproductive system, metabolism, and the immune system in both men and women. Symptoms and consequences of hormone imbalances include:

  • Endometriosis

  • Menstrual irregularities

  • PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)

  • Fertility issues

  • Osteoporosis

  • Low libido, sexual dysfunction

  • Mood swings, poor memory, excess facial hair (woman)

  • Weight gain, breast tissue (men)

  • Hormone sensitive cancers ( breast and prostate)

  • Perimenopause / Menopause

Nervous system - The nervous system sends messages in our body and brain, letting us respond to the world. Neurotransmitters are like messengers between nerve cells, some make them more active, while others calm them down. To work well in our surroundings, we need to keep these messengers in balance.

Neurotransmitter imbalances can have serious physical and mental health effects. Symptoms of imbalances include:

  • Mood disorder

  • Depression

  • ADHD, ADD and OCD

  • Addictive behaviours

  • Anger, aggression and restlessness

  • Perimenopause / Menopause

Thyroid balance - The thyroid, located in the neck, makes two hormones (T3 and T4) and calcitonin. These hormones regulate the metabolism of nearly every cell in the body, affecting various aspects of metabolism, development, and heart health.

  • Hashimoto thyroiditis

  • Hypothyroidism

  • Hyperthyroidism

  • Graves disease

  • Vitiligo

  • Psoriasis

Histamine - Histamine has multiple jobs: it communicates in the brain, helps digestion by releasing stomach acid, and acts in the immune response during stress, injury, or allergies. Symptoms can often be mistaken as food allergies or a gastrointestinal disorder. Impaired histamine degradation can result in histamine toxicity that can mimic allergic reactions:

  • Skin - itchiness, redness, rash, eczema, hives

  • Gastro-intestinal tract - stomach acid reflux, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting

  • Respiratory - runny nose, asthma, chronic cough, nasal congestion, broncho-constriction

  • Vascular - vasodilation, low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, rapid heart beat, oedema, migraines/headaches

  • Neurological - insomnia, anxiety, memory, concentration problems, ADHD
